The Leeds Stroke Database was established in 1994 by Drs John Bamford and Graham Wardman. It is managed on a day to day basis by Olasupo Ogunyinka with clerical support from Wei Wei Lee. We report to Drs John Bamford, Bipin Bhakta, Nigel Dudley, Jon Fear, Anne Forster, Peter Wanklyn, Jon Cooper, Ahamad Hassan and Jim Eccles who all have a special interest in the care of patients with stroke. We also have a Stroke Specialist Nurse - Sally Blundell who works within the Neurology department at SJUH.
The database was originally funded for a two year period by a Northern and Yorkshire Research Grant and is now funded by Leeds Health Authority.
The original aims of the database were to:
- Provide information for planning
services for patients with stroke on Leeds.
- Provide a platform to facilitate
stroke research and audit in Leeds
- Develop guidance for other
organisations in the NHS on how to develop similar databases
- Become involved in educational
programmes.
The achievements of the database to date are:
- Information provided by the
database has been used to help develop a city wide stroke
service.
- We have assisted 15 research
projects and numerous audit projects.
- A "How to do it guide"
has been prepared and widely distributed which explains
how to set up a stroke register.
- A free educational programme
has been established, open to both NHS and non-NHS organisations
in Leeds.
- Setting up this web site.
